The 15-acre development is in the heart of Nine Elms in the London Borough of Wandsworth.  The project regenerates a formerly industrial area of South West London with 1,555 new homes, 47,355sq m commercial space, 7,139sq m retail which all come with plenty of outdoor space. The residents will also have access to a gym, spa and health club, library, cinema and yoga studio and space for 339 bikes to promote cycling.

The outside of the building was clad in insulated Embassy Gardens is aiming to create one of London’s most sustainable commercial properties. With a target to reach the highest sustainability ratings, including BREEAM Outstanding, an APC A certification and a five-star NABERS energy-efficiency rating.

Delivery of waste management services

Powerday won a tender to provide full waste management services for the fit-out stage of the project, our first site with Ballymore.  Key to winning the tender were our high recycling rate, zero waste to landfill commitment, strong record on health & safety and extensive accreditations including FORS Gold, CLOCS and PAS402.

We provided skips, rolonof containers and wheeled bins for mixed construction waste, segregated plasterboard and CoSHH waste.  Collection services included dustcarts, rolonof and skip lorries which transported waste to our Brixton site, just three miles down the road.  The closeness of the site minimised transport costs and emissions whilst helping to ensure the highest standards of service delivery.  Waste was bulked and transported to our Materials Recycling Facility in Willesden Junction.  Here construction waste was sorted, with as much as possible recycled and the remainder processed as refuse derived fuel and sent to generate energy from waste.  Plasterboard was sent for recycling, and hazardous waste was incinerated in line with legislation.  We provided full reporting to Ballymore on their recycling and recovery rates, service delivery standards and other KPIs through our online reporting system.   

A successful outcome at Embassy Gardens

Over 1,300 tonnes of waste was removed during the project.  Powerday delivered 100% diversion from landfill with over 75% recycling rate, helping Ballymore achieve its environmental targets for the construction project.  Ballymore has since awarded Powerday two more projects – the Brentford Project and Royal Wharf, Deanston.
