Principle demolition
Powerday recently provided waste management services to Principle Demolition at 40 Grosvenor Place, an extensive commercial refurbishment located in the heart of Westminster. The project involved stripping back approximately 14,000m² of office and retail space across five floors, while maintaining full operational capacity on the ground and first floors for tenants. This complex undertaking required seamless waste removal and recycling, particularly with the demolition of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services, as well as the clearance of significant amounts of materials.
Powerday played a critical role in ensuring effective waste management, aligning with sustainability goals by repurposing and recycling materials whenever possible. Our meticulous tracking and reporting helped minimise the environmental footprint of this large-scale demolition, while maintaining the highest standards of on-site health and safety compliance.
Services
At 40 Grosvenor Place, we provided a range of services, including Wait & Load and wheelie bin collections, which we regularly emptied and collected using our Compactor. Our bespoke waste report shows we collected a total of 1,055.30 tonnes of material from the site. Impressively, we recycled 815.21 tonnes (77.25%), while recovering the remaining 240.09 tonnes (22.75%) for Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). These results highlight our commitment to helping clients achieve their sustainability goals and reduce the environmental impact of their projects.
At Powerday, we take pride in leading closed-loop schemes and circular initiatives, which enable us to move materials up the waste hierarchy and keep them circulating in the economy. Many of the materials collected from this site were processed and repurposed as part of various circular initiatives.
For example, we collected 212.09 tonnes of plasterboard from the project. By carefully segregating the plasterboard to prevent contamination, we ensured it reached specialist recycling facilities for processing. These facilities removed and recycled the paper, while grinding down the gypsum for reuse. This recovered gypsum not only goes into the production of new plasterboard and cement products but also serves as a valuable fertiliser in agriculture. It enriches soil with calcium and sulphur without affecting pH levels, providing an eco-friendly solution for farming.
Recycling
This project exemplifies impactful waste management in action. Principle Demolition and MadiganGill’s sustainability goals align perfectly with ours at Powerday, and a major highlight has been the salvaging and repurposing of materials throughout the project.
Since the project began in March, Principle Demolition has successfully recovered materials like glass partitions, ceiling tiles, and carpet tiles. After careful cleaning and inspection, we’ve prepared suitable items for recycling and are sending them to Africa for reuse, extending their lifecycle and reducing waste.
In collaboration with our partners at Saint-Gobain through their Glass Forever Programme, Principle Demolition also recovered 41.9 tonnes of glass from the site. This initiative saved 50.3 tonnes of virgin raw materials and reduced COâ‚‚ emissions by 29.3 tonnes.

“We were pleased to have awarded this contract to Powerday. They have delivered their services efficiently and reliably, achieved high recycling rates and 100% recovery, meeting our requirements throughout the project. They have been easy to deal with, reasonable and fair. We have been particularly impressed with their account management and waste reporting capabilities.”
