making a splash at the british down syndrome swimming championships 2023
On Saturday 18th – Sunday 19th November 2023, Down Syndrome Swimming Great Britain (DSS-GB) hosted the second British Down Syndrome Swimming Championships at the K2 Crawley. With over 130 swimmers, the event showcased the fantastic achievements of athletes with Down syndrome from across the UK.
DSS-GB is a volunteer led charity that is recognised as a national swimming
organisation for Great Britain for Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) and SportExcel UK. DSSGB’s purpose is to support swimmers with Down syndrome to realise their full potential and compete at the highest levels of their sport.
The British Championships took place in Crawley thanks to the principal sponsorship of leading London waste management company Powerday and construction and engineering specialist Keltbray. Both companies, through their Foundations, are well known for championing health and wellbeing through sport in their local communities.
At present athletes with Down syndrome are not represented well on the international sporting stage, and one of the aims of these Championships is to raise the profile of Down syndrome swimming. We are confident that
these British Championships will highlight what athletes can achieve when supported in an environment of open expectations and positive coaching.
Liz Johnson, winner of golf at Beijing, silver at Athens and bronze at London Paralympic Games said: “On behalf of DSS-GB, we want to urge key governing bodies, including British Swimming and the home nations’ sport governing bodies, to recognise the significance of this event and endorse it”
Further building on the success of last year, the British Championships have now secured their place in the annual disability sporting calendar.
We were pleased to have awarded this contract to Powerday. They have delivered their services efficiently and reliably, achieved high recycling rates and 100% recovery, meeting our requirements throughout the project. They have been easy to deal with, reasonable and fair. We have been particularly impressed with their account management and waste reporting capabilities
