British Down Syndrome Swimming Championships continues to showcase Down syndrome swimming at its best!
On Saturday 16th – Sunday 17th November 2024, Down Syndrome Swimming Great Britain (DSS-GB) hosted the second British Down Syndrome Swimming Championships at the K2 Crawley. The event showcased the fantastic achievements of athletes with Down syndrome from across the UK.
Powerday has proudly sponsored the British Down Syndrome Swimming Championships since its launch in 2022, and it’s been amazing to see how much the event has grown. This year’s competition was truly special, welcoming a record breaking 161 swimmers, including international teams from Ireland, Estonia, Egypt, Portugal, and Japan.
DSS-GB is a volunteer led charity that is recognised as a national swimming
organisation for Great Britain for Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) and SportExcel UK. DSSGB’s purpose is to support swimmers with Down syndrome to realise their full potential and compete at the highest levels of their sport.
The British Championships took place in Crawley thanks to the principal sponsorship of leading London waste management company Powerday and construction and engineering specialist Keltbray. Both companies, through their Foundations, are well known for championing health and wellbeing through sport in their local communities.
On her return from commentating at this year’s Paralympics in Paris, Liz Johnson winner of Gold at Beijing, Silver at Athens and Bronze at the London Paralympic Games, and Managing Director and Co-Founder at The Ability People, said: “Swimming is more than just a sport; it’s a welcoming community where you can be your true self, free from inhibitions, and focus on the joy of swimming. By raising the profile of Down Syndrome swimming, we’re creating environments where all swimmers can thrive, feel valued, and have equal opportunities, regardless of their challenges.”
