Digital Waste Tracking: What it means for your waste journey

Digital Waste Tracking: What it means for your waste journey

The way waste is tracked across the UK is changing. The new Digital Waste Tracking legislation is designed to create a clearer, more consistent picture of where waste comes from, where it goes and how it is managed along the way.

It marks an important step in the industry’s journey towards greater transparency, stronger compliance and better use of data. But, as with any significant change, there will also be new processes to understand and navigate.

Digital Waste Tracking will introduce a more consistent digital approach to recording waste movements, replacing many of the fragmented and paper-based records currently used across the industry.

The rollout begins on 1 October 2026, when permitted waste sites in England and Wales will be required to report the waste they receive through the Government’s new digital service. Further stages will follow as the system develops across the wider waste journey.

The aim is simple: to make it easier to understand what happens to waste from the point it leaves a business through to its next destination and, ultimately, how it is treated or recovered.

For most Powerday customers, there should be limited immediate change when the first phase comes into force.

However, the direction of travel is clear. Accurate information about waste – what it is, where it has come from and where it is going – will become increasingly important as digital tracking is introduced across more of the waste chain.

That means working with a waste partner that can provide clear records, maintain strong compliance standards and help you understand the journey your materials take will become more valuable than ever.

At Powerday, our focus is on making that transition as straightforward as possible. We’ll continue to guide our customers through changes in regulation, helping to keep waste moving efficiently while providing the clarity and confidence they need.

There is plenty to welcome about the move towards Digital Waste Tracking.

Better visibility of waste movements should make it easier for businesses to demonstrate compliance and gain a clearer understanding of what happens to their waste after collection.

More accurate, consistent data could also support better decision-making around recycling, resource efficiency and sustainability reporting, helping businesses measure progress and identify opportunities for improvement.

For the wider industry, increased transparency should also make it harder for illegal waste operators to hide poor practice, creating a more level playing field for responsible businesses that invest in doing things properly.

Any change of this scale will bring challenges.

Waste businesses operate a wide variety of systems and processes, so connecting those successfully to a national digital service will require preparation. There may also be an adjustment period as businesses become familiar with new reporting requirements and ensure the right information is being captured at every stage.

Greater transparency also means greater scrutiny. Inaccurate waste descriptions, missing information or inconsistencies in records could become easier to identify, making good data and robust processes increasingly important.

There is also a balance to strike. Digital tracking has the potential to make the industry more efficient, but it must do so without creating unnecessary administration for businesses or slowing down the movement of materials through the waste journey.

Digital Waste Tracking is another significant milestone in the waste industry’s move towards a more transparent and accountable future.

There will undoubtedly be some challenges along the way, but the opportunity is equally clear: better information, stronger traceability and greater confidence in where waste goes and how it is managed.

For Powerday, the priority remains the same, helping our customers navigate change with clarity, keeping their waste moving in the right direction and turning new requirements into an opportunity for continued progress.
