first carbon target exceeded with 25% cut!

We have surpassed our first interim target of 20%, achieving a 25% reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2023.

We are thrilled to announce that we have surpassed our first interim target, achieving a remarkable 25% reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2023.

In March 2023, we committed to reaching net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040, based on a 2021 baseline. Our ambitious interim goals include a 20% reduction by 2023, 35% by 2026, and 50% by 2030. Since we began measuring our emissions in 2020, we have implemented significant measures to reduce our carbon footprint.

Key to our success was transitioning our electricity usage to renewable tariffs at a number of our locations, including Old Oak Sidings, Enfield, Brixton, Heathrow, and Wimbledon in 2022. Additionally, we introduced electric vehicles into our company fleet, replacing fossil fuel cars.

In 2023, despite transitioning Canning Town to renewable electricity, installing solar panels at Old Oak Sidings, and investing in electric skip vehicles, we experienced a slight increase in total emissions (just under 2%) due to business growth and an expanding fleet.

Looking ahead, we are determined to meet our next interim target of a 35% reduction by 2026. With over 99% of remaining emissions under this Scope 1 and 2 target coming from our fleet and plant operations, we have convened a fleet and plant decarbonisation strategy group to drive the necessary progress.

Liam Kearney, Joint Managing Director at Powerday, stated, “Achieving net zero as quickly as possible is crucial for our business, and we are delighted with our progress so far. We recognise the challenges ahead but are committed to making the required reductions while pursuing ambitious growth plans. We are working with external consultants to support our sustainability team, to ensure we build the required skills in-house to meet our commitments and accurately and credibly measure our achievements.”

We also understand that Scope 1 and 2 emissions are only part of the picture. Throughout 2023, we focused on understanding our Scope 3 emissions to set a net zero target for these indirect value chain emissions. This work continues into 2024, and we will provide updates in the coming year.

Carbon management is one of five sustainability pillars underpinning Powerday’s responsible business strategy. Each spring, we publish our annual sustainability manifesto, detailing our progress against the previous year’s plan and setting new objectives for the upcoming year.
