Imperial College London Students Visit Powerday

A group of students from Imperial College London visited Powerday last week to learn more about the waste and recycling industry and understand how their latest project could contribute to the recovery process.

The undergraduates are representing Imperial College London in the Internationally Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, an annual international synthetic biology competition with over 200 participating teams. The Imperial College London team is designing a bioreactor for the recycling of plastics. The students are planning to use solid recovered fuel (SRF) as a feedstock to grow their own engineered bacteria which in turn will degrade plastics in the SRF and produce biodegradable plastics.
