Employee Spotlight – Meet Powerday HGV Driver, Roman Thewar
At Powerday, our team is made up of hard working individuals with unique stories and ambitions. One such team member is Roman Thewar, a HGV Driver in Willesden, who has been with us since 2015. Beyond his role at Powerday, Roman is also pursuing a master’s degree in architecture, a lifelong dream that he’s determined to achieve. In this Q&A, Roman shares insights into his journey, the challenges of balancing work and study, and his passion for both sustainability and motorcycle restoration.
Tell us a bit about yourself! How long have you been with Powerday, and what does your role involve?
I joined Powerday in December 2015 as a HGV Driver class 1 RORO Wagon & Drag, at our Old Oak Siding’s site. My role is mainly based on transporting cargo waste between our customers and depot. My main duty involves the operation of a skip hook wagon to deliver and remove skips and equipment for our clients.
What is the most rewarding part of your role and what do you enjoy most about working at Powerday?
The most rewarding part of my role is being part of the Powerday Family, and I’m so grateful that I get the chance to work with such nice people who look after their staff in many ways. From my very first day, Powerday warmly welcomed me, and over the years have let me develop my skills. Besides being a driver, my daily routine involves visiting the biggest construction sites in London, such a HS2 or Kier Group Plc. This allowed me to see how sites are organised from scratch, understand construction methods, materials, and equipment, and learn about building regulations and safety standards, including the importance of sustainable construction, which involves recycling.
Architecture is not only about buildings, but the whole construction process, so to be a part of the Powerday crew lets me understand the important role of recycling as a part of sustainable construction.
Alongside your job, you’re studying for a master’s in architecture, what led you to pursue this path?
Since I can remember, I always wanted to design and create new things. Curiosity and exploring megastructures led me to architecture. My plans to be an architect had been diverted due to a circumstance. Thanks to God, I have a second chance to finish what I started a long time ago. With massive support from Powerday, I’m able to continue my education and I’m now on my last stretch to graduation. I’m extremely grateful that Powerday took the time and effort to help me with my journey.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in juggling both commitments, and how have you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I faced was organising time. Most of my university programme requires visiting construction sites during the week, studying part-time and attending campus every other weekend. So, it wasn’t an easy decision, and my first step was to seek Powerday’s opinion. I remember when we had a meeting, I was afraid that maybe I’m asking too much, but the reaction of my managers was very positive. Now I know it was the right way to do it, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Powerday’s support.
I visit construction sites every day, so I knew I wouldn’t need to do that in addition as part of my university programme. Thanks to the awesome team at Powerday, who always support me by adjusting my weekend shifts to align with my university schedule, I’ve been able to manage both commitments effectively. On the top of that I had to become self-organised and strictly focus on the most important things, often sacrificing social life.
Outside of work and studying, how do you like to spend your free time?
I see myself as an active person, so it’s hard to keep me at home. I’m always trying to find time for the gym, and I love exploring big cities – especially London, which is one of the largest and has incredible architecture. One of my guilty pleasures is motorcycle restoration.
