Powerday celebrates National Apprenticeship week

This week marked the 17th annual National Apprenticeship Week with “Skills for Life” being the theme for 2024. To celebrate, Powerday sat down with two of our very own apprentices to talk about their roles and study.

Alex Rowsome – Office Administrator

My role at Powerday is Office Administrator where I cover multiple mailboxes where we receive all generic enquiries, along with assisting with setting up new accounts or sending out account forms. I look into permits for our customers if skips are required on public roads and assist with pricing changes along with many other daily tasks.

I am undertaking a Business Administration apprenticeship because I want to broaden my knowledge and skills within the business sector so that I can improve in my role and progress further.

I was 18 when I started working full time in Powerday as a Customer Service advisor, and then started as an Office Administrator with my apprenticeship when I was 20.

I enjoy my role because I have a variety of different tasks each day and I communicate with different customers as well. No day is the same and I enjoy that because I find variety to be more stimulating.

From my apprenticeship, I have transferred many of my gained skills to my role at work, but the skill I have used the most is communication. There are several ways to communicate and that depends on your audience; different people respond to different methods and when communicating with customers, you must do this at a high standard because you are representing the business.

So far, the best and most useful part of my apprenticeship is learning new skills that are extremely applicable to my day-to-day tasks at work, as well as showing me ways to research and improve.

Simona Flore – Credit Controller

My role is Credit Controller and I was 21 years old when I started. My job involves managing and monitoring live accounts for our customers, assisting with collecting payments and posting daily banking, managing and resolving queries as well as raise credit notes when due. I enjoy it because I get to work with such a great team!

I am currently completing a Business Administration apprenticeship as I wanted to develop my knowledge and skills so that I am able to do my job the best way possible – and also to be able to advance in my career within the company.

The skills gained from my apprenticeship have helped me perform better in my role by helping me use my time more efficiently by completing tasks in a more effective way. What I have found most interesting and useful during my course is the research applied to complete an assignment – this in turn has given me a better understanding of our the business works and therefore better at my job!

My apprenticeship has contributed towards my future career aspirations by widening my professional network, enhancing my range of new skills and giving me a confidence boost towards ones that I already had such as: problem solving and teamwork, all being useful for my current role and anything I potentially do in the future.

If you like to be hands on whilst learning the academics behind the job role you are interested in, then this is for you – whist it can get busy or overwhelming while trying to juggle the learning as well as training and doing your job, it will help you develop your time management skills and ability to multitask which is going to be great tool to have in the future no matter the path you are taking.
