London Boxing and The Powerday Foundation Launch Women and Girls Development Project

London, April 14, 2024 – London Boxing, the leading authority for amateur boxing in the capital, and The Powerday Foundation, the charitable arm of Powerday PLC, proudly announces the launch of the “London Boxing Women and Girls Development Project.”

This initiative aims to transform the landscape of women’s boxing, fostering inclusivity, empowerment, and excellence for females across Greater London.

The project’s primary focus is to address the need for increased opportunities and engagement for women and girls in the sport of boxing. Despite some progress in certain clubs, there remains a significant gap in access and participation levels for females, both recreationally and competitively. London Boxing is committed to bridging this gap and creating a more accessible ecosystem for female boxers of all ages.

“We’ve seen a growing demand from our female stakeholders for more opportunities to participate in boxing,” said Lenny Hagland, Chairman at London Boxing. “With this project, we’re taking proactive steps to elevate women’s boxing across the capital.”

The project’s goals are ambitious yet achievable, aiming to engage over 240 new females in the sport and provide them with competitive opportunities over the course of 12 months.

Through a series of “This Girl Can” events held in six different locations across London, participants will have access to both recreational and competitive avenues tailored exclusively for women and girls. The first session was held on Sunday 14th April at Islington Boxing club for free to females aged 10 to 40.

“We’re not just aiming for participation; we’re aiming for excellence,” added Bill Cox of The Powerday Foundation. “By providing high-quality coaching, mentorship, and competitive opportunities, we’re empowering the next generation of female boxers to reach their full potential.”

The project’s approach is multifaceted, combining competitive events with pre-event taster sessions led by female coaches. These sessions will not only introduce newcomers to the sport but also remove barriers to entry by providing free access to those from socio-economically challenged backgrounds.

To ensure the success of the project, The Powerday Foundation obtained funding, both internal and external, to cover essential resources such as venue hire, equipment, medical support, and marketing. With this support, the project aims to deliver a transformative experience for women and girls, opening doors to sustained participation and progression within the sport.

The Powerday Foundation was established out of the Powerday Development Programme which was set up to provide support and funding to local sporting organisations and individuals in London.
