Construction employment scheme for ex-offenders

Powerday has embarked on a partnership with Bounce Back.  The charity and social enterprise works with ex-offenders, providing training and employment to those who are nearing the end of their sentences via their Out For Good project. Based in HMP Brixton, the project focuses on getting people into paid employment in the construction sector by providing presentations and mock interviews with the prisoners with a view to hiring them once they’re released.

These sessions highlight to the serving sentence prisoners, the work positions available within Powerday, share the company ethos and give a realistic view of the expectations and challenges of each role. On each occasion, Powerday has supported up to 30 serving sentence prisoners, conducting mock interviews, giving career guidance.  We have identified eight candidates so far to whom we would like to offer roles.

Unsuccessful candidates are not completely ruled-out however.  Should they complete the required training in their chosen field and gain a CSCS card, Bounce Back then supports them to set-up and complete 'sentence plans'.  These give them the necessary skills, documents and training to enter the roles.  Bounce Back supports candidates in their first months in the job up to a year after release.

The prisoners have the opportunity to gain Level 1 in Painting and Decorating, and a CITB C Skills course in Dry Lining to Diploma level 2.  A community-based course is also run in conjunction with Crisis and trains to NVQ level 1.

The scheme not only benefits the ex-offenders but also Powerday’s construction clients who receive extensively screened, motivated and well-trained local candidates with enhanced skills and knowledge around sustainable waste management.
